Many ages will show on a census as a year "out".

eg. Said to be 10 when the 1911 census was taken on 2 April 1911, the year of birth would be calculated by 1911-10 = 1901. However they could have been born anytime between 3rd April 1900 and 2nd April 1901 (so the odds are in favour of a 1900 birth.

Also with births, there was a 6 week window in which to register them, so if born c20th November 1900 (4th Quarter of the year or December Qtr), their birth might not be registered until the 1st Qtr or March Qtr 1901.

Peoples ages varied from one census to the next - forgetfulness, deliberate, good guess etc. Who could not forgive the mother trying to remember the ages of her 12 children!

With deaths, more recent records give a DOB, but don't forget that the information is only as good as it is known to the person giving it. And again age 80 at death, 1980- 80 = 1900, but could well be 1899.

It's always good to give a +/- 2 years when searching for records and go wider if nothing found within that range.

Hello Richard,

Really the only way to prove what is in trees you have found is to work through them . Checking all the details as you go, particularly if they are unsourced.

Start with what you know, your parents, grandparents etc and work back methodically through BMD certificates, the available census and then parish records .

There are some trees which have been well researched, but also many that are totally wrong and they are copied without any checks on accuracy.

PS. Freebmd.org.uk is a good starting point, for the marriage of your parents and ancestors back to 1837,

Richyrich

I am new to this and am struggling to start as I have too many names. I also have lots of trees written by others back to 1200's
How would anyone suggest I start to prove any of what is existing in these old trees
Also is everything in the archives "Fact" or will I be easily led astray?
Many thanks in anticipation
