1871 Census entry Query

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Robert

Robert Report 9 Mar 2015 16:01

Found an odd entry which ties into my tree as follows:

First Name Emma J
Last Name Chanter
Birth Year 1858
Age 13
Birth Place England
Birth Town
Birth County Devon
Gender Female
Relationship To Head of Household Daughter
Occupation
Condition
Street Clifton Road
Parish St Sidwell
Town
City Exeter
County Devon
Country England
Ecclesiastical District
Enumeration District 9
Municipal Ward St Sidwell
Parliamentary Borough Exeter
Registration District Exeter
Category Census, Land & Surveys
Record set 1871 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Collections from Great Britain
Archive Reference RG10
Folio 103
Page 18
Piece Number 2062

The query is when looking at the original entry (which is over 2 pages) she is shown as daughter, with niece on next page but there is no Head of household or parents shown.

Were the parents not added for some reason - any ideas?? :-S

If this is her father, he's a widower, and a Commercial traveller, so he was simply away from home on Census night, and the other record is accurate

It is a strange way to record her but Jacqueline is correct with the census above and her explanation.

Thanks for quick response

- mystery solved - that's why the niece is there to look after the 13 year old girl.
