As you know her first name and her date of birth you should be able to narrow down the birth quarter .
Try looking for her christian name in the birth quarter. With both her and her mums surname being the same

You may have to buy some certs

Hi Laura.
If you would rather pursue this yourself, I understand, but if you want help that's fine too! But you would have to tell us absolutely everything you know. Date & place of birth (if you know it!) plus her forenames for starters.

You can search using just a first name/s,year and the quarter, you maybe able to pick something from that ,like name area of birth,,,,,,but it could throw up more than 1 ,also assuming her christain name/s didnt change.

What is your Gran's first name and where and when was she born?

If we look for births in that area, we might be able to deduce which one is hers.

Do you think her first name was unchanged?

Yes she grew up using her fathers surname (Jones) but I believe she may have been registered under her mothers surname. The birth certificate is what I'm looking for so that I can identify my great grandmother.

Hi, it's complicated but no they weren't married and my grandfather and his wife (my grans stepmother) raised the baby (my gran). My gran was brought up using the surname Jones (her biological fathers surname) but I can't find any record of her under that name so am presuming the birth was registered under her biological mothers surname. As I say all I have to go on now is my grans first name and d.o.b.

? What surname did your grandmother use when she married..?

Laura, do you mean she grew up using her father's surname, but would have been registered differently? I take it you have checked Freebmd and ruled out her being registered in his name?
If so, I guess she never had her birth cert.

Wouldn't her mother's name be on her birth certificate?

I take it her biological father wasn't married to her biological mother?

Hi,

Thank you both so much for getting back to me so soon. The situation is kind of complicated I guess. My grandmother was raised by her biological father (very common name) and her step mother. She did not know her biological mother and was never given any information. My grandmother was born in 1939. I feel like I'm at a dead end already!

Hi Laura welcome to the message boards.

The simple answer is probably not, but post the info you have and see what happens when people on her look in records.

Hi Laura.
This would be very tricky. You might check for baptisms, but obviously the birth date is different.
You can check using year and quarter, if you have a birthplace.
As far as I know, asduming this is England/Wales, the only time birth dates can be used is for deaths after 1969.
Unless the name is very unusual there will be a lot of people who meet these criteria.
If you want to tell us what your query is I am sure someone will try to help.

Hi,

Does anyone know if it is possible to trace a record by D.O.B and first name alone?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Many thanks,

L
