UK military service records post WW1 are, by and large, still with the MOD. To access them you'd need to prove that the serviceman was deceased and that you are related. There is a cost of £30.

If he married or died whilst in the forces, you may find the GRO index reference on this site or Findmypast. You may be able to order the certificate.

The names of British subjects who are charged/imprisoned overseas are sometimes reported in newspaper articles. Try googling his name or look on the British newspaper archive. Probably more people don't make the Papers than do!

When were you last in contact with the man, and how old would he be now? We may be able to suggest routes to explore.

Where have you looked?

It isn't tactful to suggest on a public forum that someone living may have been a criminal

There are no emigration or service records for the time-scale.

You need to give more details- name. dates, and any info on army or overseas records - when and where and when you think the person may have been in prison
