You may have to accept that their births simply weren't registered.

Until 1875, there weren't any penalties........

Have you tried looking for baptisms on the FREE familysearch site?

I'd be interested to know what it says- but wouldn't be surprised if she has a different father listed- it's possible the Davis children were illegitimate.

Getting the mother's marriage certificate would tell you if she was single or a widow when she married:

Marriage
Name: Mary Davis
Gender: Female
Marriage Date: 14 Jan 1863
Marriage Place: Saint Andrew,Droitwich,Worcester,England
Spouse: William Knott
FHL Film Number: 0354318, 0354319

Marriages Mar 1863 (>99%)
DAVIS Mary Droitwich 6c 433 <<<<<<<<<
DUGGAN Sarah Droitwich 6c 433
KNOTT William Droitwich 6c 433 <<<<<<<<<
NICKLIN George Droitwich 6c 433

I'll let you know if I spot anything else x

The 1891 for Mary (who is most likely Martha from the 1861 census) seems to confirm the connection with your Sarah Davis/ Crowther, as they have a Maria Crowther lodging with them.

I'm not certain, but I suspect Martha was actually Mary- but was called Martha to distinguish from mother.

So we're trying find Sarah's birth- which is consistently Castle Bromwich- who does she list as her father on the marriage certificate?

hi everyone thanks for your work
that is sarah on the 71 census its her birth i am trying to find
that is the only census i know is definatly her
marriage cert gives her one birth date and death cert gives her another (she drown 1880)
sylvania free b m d is dificult because there are so many birmingham births,
or was she registered in an outlying birmingham suburb hence my original question.
i went to wdytya saturday and one of the experts suggested i follow up this sarah (1861 census)saying martha would be an easier name to follow
thanks again

Gritty

Gritty Report 25 Apr 2015 21:50

Apologies- the 1861 transcription from fmp states Worcestershire- but image states Coleshill, Warwickshire.

Do you have members of this family on any other census Zena?

BeverleyW

BeverleyW Report 25 Apr 2015 20:57

The 1861 census on Ancestry says 'Coleshill, Warwickshire' - not Worcestershire - which I think is correct.
I don't remember Coleshill being near the Worcester border,
