is this recent if so have you looked on electoral rolls

if they are pre 1911 then you need Scotlands People for BMDS which isnt a subs site

Can you give us details of names and years, please? In fact, all info you already know.

Although Scotlands People is the main site for Scottish records, there's also a lot available on other sites, such as Ancestry.co.uk.
(That 's assuming it's ancestors you want to trace, and not living people.)

PM from Colin today:

Trying to find A Mary Skelton born approx. 1921/2 possible Glasgow.
I think she married approx. 1940 to a man by the name Ellis.
Possible children Brian 1940, Ann between 1940 and 1948.
Regards Colin

Have advised Colin to reply on here rather than to me personally.

For such recent dates / people, this is the website you need to use, Colin.
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
As Shirley said, it's not a subscription site, so you'd have to register and buy credits.

You can order BMD certs for £12 through ScotlandsPeople - for older ones you can buy credits and view/print the image of the original document online

To start you off, this is the marriage (when you've found this record online, you'll see where to click to order):

1947 ELLIS ALFRED
SKELTON MARY YOUNG B
SPRINGBURN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/05 0007

The cert will tell you their parents names and fathers' occupations.
It will also tell you Alfred's age at marriage, so you can perhaps trace his birth / parents / possibly death..

This is Mary's birth record:

1921 SKELTON MARY YOUNG BRAM F GARNGADHILL GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/05 0911

"Bram" is short for a name which will be written in full on the cert. The cert will also give you her parents' names, and their date and place of marriage, so if you want to trace your tree further back, you can go from there.

She may still be alive. I don't see her death, either on SP up to 2013, or on ancestry .co.uk, which covers English/Welsh deaths up to 2006.
(Unless she's only listed as Mary Ellis, with no middle names, in which case I can't tell which of several records could be hers.)

Re son Brian -
if they lived in Glasgow, there are possible births in 1951, 1952, and 1957, but as it's not possible to use mother's maiden surname as a search term on SP for births after 1854, it's impossible to know if any of them are the right person.

If they lived in Scotland, but not in Glasgow, there are several other possibilities - but again, impossible to know which might be the right one without buying the certs - an expensive business.

The same goes for Ann -
if born in Glasgow, there are only girls with Ann as their middle name, 1935-60, apart from an Ann in Edinburgh in 1951, and one in Dundee 1953.

Wild guess:
this one might be a possibility if the S stands for Skelton - you'd have to buy the cert to find out:

1960 ELLIS MARY ANN S F BLYTHSWOOD GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 0104
