Thanks Gritty

I will check with my husbands records to make sure this is the right person and then update his notes for him. Its nice when you get that little extra detail it makes the person all the more real.

All the best

The above acquittal was for a George Richards aged 14. The alledged assault happened on the 9th April at Rewe.

Exeter and Plymouth Gazette - Friday 05 July 1878

...On behalf of the prisoner it was contended that the child had made a mistake as to his identity, and it was further contended that her evidence was not corroborated - The Jury found the prisoner not guilty"

Thanks Kucinta

I will take a look and see what I can find. Not sure I will find anything for George, but it is useful information should I find any other bad boys/girls in the family.

Thanks for helping

Ancestry is having a free weekend this weekend:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1352419

and they have

England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892

might be worth a go.

EDIT: More the crime and the sentence than the prison record per se.

Have you tried the British Newspaper Archive for a newspaper report?

Try http://www.blacksheepancestors.com/index.shtml

There are records of sentencing by the Courts on FMP, a site for which payment is required. However, not very many of them have been transcribed.

No-one expected you to know exactly when he was in prison, but you must know in which century, at least, he was born

As you don't want anyone to do lookups, I'll leave you to do them yourself.

Good luck

Thank you all for your help.

I was only asking if there was a way to find out about Prison records. I wasn't expecting people to do a look up for me. I do not know when he was in prison but he came from Devon/ Cornwall so I guess he committed his crimes down there.

Where do you get information about prison records from?

Thanks

Jane

As one who has posted over 3000 times on these boards, you should know how to ask for help

Location and time-scale are obviously needed

If the one born 1852/3/4 there are several prison records for that one - 1877,1879,1893,1898 and 1910

The prison records seem to be for different men as different locations and occupations

But as already asked we need more info

Hope this is not the one that was jailed in 2014
