Thanks LancashireAnn

I knew of Lan-opc and the great work they have done so far - this was where I was able to confirm the children's births too.

Another mystery has popped up regarding the Graham's. the birth of their daughter Catherine Upton Graham, in 1868 at St. James the Less church in Liverpool, the parish records for this church have not been transcribed..I have no idea what the name "Upton" means, the christening records state that Hugh and Susannah are her parents. Can anyone shed any light on this puzzle?

Jacqueline, could be right. I know my grandmother's family were strict Catholics, and there is rumour further down the line that my grandfather converted to the Catholic faith to marry my gran (who was Susannah' Kemp's great-grandaughter).
many thanks

As the children were baptised C of E, and Hugh's mother was Irish, perhaps he was R C, and therein lay a problem with regards to marrying

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 23 Jun 2015 08:24

freebmd has no record of any possible marriage - at any time, or in any location

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 23 Jun 2015 04:13

lots of people back then didn't bother getting married ............. I sometimes think there were as many common-law couples as there are today!

One reason of course, was the fact that divorces were impossible to get for any but the very rich, so people whose marriage failed either had to live common-law or marry bigamously.

I see that Jacqueline has ruled out an earlier marriage for either Hugh or Susannah before their first child was born?

Have you looked for a marriage much later?

Rosezina

Rosezina Report 22 Jun 2015 22:45

thanks everyone for the posts. I already had all the above info thanks. I find it hard to believe that a couple living in a big religious city like Liverpool in the 1860s would baptise their 6 children and not bother to get wed. I know it's possible of course.. I think I need to expand my search beyond Liverpool!

Can anyone help? I have been searching for my 3 x great grandparents marriage records for months and found nothing.

Hugh Graham (dock porter) born 1841, Liverpool,
Susannah Kemp born 1837 in St. Peter's Church Liverpool.

They had 6 children which I have found on all the census forms for 1871 - 1901 and on Church of England parish records - but no sign of their marriage. They lived at many addresses in the Vauxhall area of Liverpool. Their first child Hugh, was born in July 1862, so I think they may have married between 1858-1861.
