I'm trying to find out what registration district Ightam in Kent would have been in during the years 1945 - 1948.

Any help would be most welcome, thank you.

Prior to 1941 it was in Malling district, then Malling was split between Maidstone, Dartford, and Tonbridge districts. Ightam was then in Maidstone district.

All info here:

That's really only a partial methodology. It's all very well to say they were in Malling in, say, 1911, and here's how to follow them forward to 1945, but there wee 26 RDs in Kent in 1911, so how to pick between them is a problem.

Initial RDs were based upon poor-law unions. This info is useful in Ireland since the 1901/1911 censuses name the poor-law union (it's not on the main image, but one of the associated images).

Anyways, Lewis (1848) names the English poor-law unions, e.g.,

IGHTHAM (St. Peter), a parish, in the union of West Malling, hundred of Wrotham, lathe of Aylesford, W. division of Kent, 1¾ mile (S. W.) from Wrotham
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/topographical-dict/england

Alternatively -

The GRO was responsible for the census from 1841.
From 1851 onwards, the census was based on the RD structure.
The census forms were classed as ho107 in 1841-1851, and rg9 thru rg14 in 1861-1911 respectively.

The NA catalogs the piece #s for censuses, so go to
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
and do an advanced search for Ightham (note spelling) within reference rg14 (for 1911) - we get hits like:

Reference: RG 14/3990
Description:
Registration Sub-District: Wrotham
Civil Parish, Township or Place:
Ightham (part)
RD 48 RS 2 ED 9

and at foot of page is:

Context of this record Browse by Reference
All departments
RG - Records of the General Register Office, Government Social Survey Department, and Office of Population Censuses and Surveys
RG 14 - General Register Office: 1911 Census Schedules
Kent
Malling
RG 14/3990 - Registration Sub-District: Wrotham Civil Parish, Township or Place: Ightham (part) RD...

The line after the (registration) county gives the RD - Malling here.

A similar search within reference rg9 give the 1861 piece #s, e.g.,

Reference: RG 9/486
Description:
Registration Sub-District 3 Wrotham.
Parish: Offham.
Parish: Addington; Hamlet: Aldon (part) (Rest is in RG 9/484).
Parish: Trotterscliffe.
Parish: Stanstead.
Parish: Wrotham; Hamlet: Basted; Hamlet: Clackett Cross; Hamlet: Crouch; Hamlet: Dunks Green; Hamlet: Nepicar; Hamlet: Borough Green (part) (Divided between Ightham and Wrotham parishes); Hamlet: Plaxtole; Hamlet: St Mary Platt; Hamlet: St Mary Woodlands (part) (Divided between RG 9/486 and 487).
Parish: Ightham; Hamlet: Moat; Hamlet: Ivyhatch; Hamlet: Redwell; Hamlet: Oldbury; Hamlet: Borough Green (part) (Divided between Ightham and Wrotham parishes).

and again the footer gives:

Context of this record Browse by Reference
All departments
RG - Records of the General Register Office, Government Social Survey Department, and Office of Population Censuses and Surveys
RG 9 - General Register Office: 1861 Census Returns
KENT
Registration District 55. MALLING
RG 9/486 - Registration Sub-District 3 Wrotham. Parish: Offham. Parish: Addington; Hamlet: Aldon...

So that gives you a starting point to apply the earlier methodology.

Thank you so much for going to such lengths, mgnv! I've certainly found it to be complicated..

Many thanks again for all your time :-)
