I have found on line this series of documents Concerning Bastardy process /Vagrency passess/ Settlement examinations etc/.

There appear to be 8 stages of Bastardy procedure,
1. The mother informs on the identity of the father.

3. Bastardy Recognizance, a bond instructing the ' father 'to appear before the quarter sessions,

6. Bastardy Order- this highlights who is to pay whatever.

8. Bastardy Bond this is a promise by a bondsman to pay the parish any costs incurred by the father.

The entry I have is stage 3 for Ann Bramhall against Richard Massey, on 6 nov 1745 , both of Over Tabley, Cheshire.

I cannot find other references to these people, around this date. Any suggestions? :-S

Thank you your replies.

There dosnt seem a way of estimating her dates. If at the birth of the child around 1745 she was 21+ the middle which date seems OK.
There are a few Richard Massey around but none it appears are shoemakers - which is an apprenticed trade, nothing something to drop into
.
He I suppose could be any age between 20 and 50.?

What I cannot find is the birth of the child which I would have thought would have been baptised locally in cheshire, c1745. I presume it was living at this date too.

But without the 8th stage - the issue of the bond - I can't iderntfy them??

Just in case - VERY long shot - maybe she later admitted the child wasn't Jacob's after all ??!! (Not likely, I know!)

That's a possible I think.

Perhaps he looked different ?

But need to see the rest of the documents to see how it was settled in the court.and if any others are noted.

I don't know how long these cases took to process.
