Thanx for your replies.......Mary Ann Butler(nee Ryan) was first married to Thomas Johnson in 1863. They had a son, Martin James b 1864. May Ann,
then married Thomas Butler, after first husband Thomas Johnson died.

They then went on to have 3 children, Thomas b1970... Mary Ann b1872/3 and Ellen b 1875

James is unlikely to have been a full sibling to Mary

Looking at the 1881 census

Thomas & James were boys so it was 'more important' to register their births.

Ellen was born after birth registration became compulsary.

Why do you think she was born in Darlington?

her parents said she was born in Sheffield, and one would expect them to know

Thank you for your reply. No problems finding this person on census, just cannot locate birth certificate. Contacted GRO, but no luck. May b she wasn't registered, both her siblings were, as I have their certificates.

Who is named as her father on the marriage cert?

Have you asked before about her?

You do realise, I hope, that until 1875, there weren't any penalties for not registering births

WHO did she marry? And when/where?

She should be on the 1881 census...............it's free on familysearch.

Still looking for any information on this lady. Born 1872/3.. Think in Darlington!
Have searched for the past 2yrs, and have drawn a blank :-( she is my Great Grandmother. Have marriage and death certificates for this lady, but cannot trace a birth certificate. Hope someone can help.
