Does anyone have any knowledge of G W Saxby & Son Margate -
Jewellers & Clock Makers.

I know they were still there in 1936 but can’t seem to find anything about them.

I wanted to know if they made Chiming Mantle clocks to order or if it was just a case of Seeing what they had in the shop & buying it.

Anything you can help with would be very greatly appreciated

Thank you for reading

They are in a Kelly's directory as watch makers (not just retailers) so I would think they probably made clocks and watches but whether they made them to order or not is another matter.

Thank you - they are not ancestors we have just been given one of their clocks & were interested in finding out about their history etc and if this was a one off clock or one of a few

Margate Library have a local studies section. They may have a brochure/catalogue or other details about them.

I agree with Kath - they probably made watches and clocks - so reasonable to assume they might have made one to order.

In 1901 census GW is described as a watchmaker & jeweller.
In 1911 he's a watchmaker.

Thank you for all the info - we were just wondering if Great auntie had it made specially as her husband always liked to have something unique - not the normal run of the mill things

Next time we are in Margate we will have a look round & see what we can find

they use to keep all the receipts but we couldn't find the one for the clock
