A birth record in free BMD gives the page number but this has been crossed out and a different page number inserted, with the suffix /S. Can anyone please explain the significance of this?

The significance is that the original entry was corrected or amended at a later date. The page with the 's' indexes to the amendment which appears as a new entry in the actual register, and hence on a later page.

This is exacly what happened with my father's death registration as the coroner registering the birth managed to make two mistakes when originally registering which had to be corrected later.

The suffix /s sometimes means that the child has been adopted.

Thank you so much. As the informant was a police officer, well used to getting dates, names and places correct, I guess adoption was the correct option. But- supplementary here - does that mean that the child as registered had been adopted, or that he was put up for adoption after birth?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I think it should mean that the child was registered first, and then at a later date was adopted, and the amendment added.

it could also mean that the child was actually illegitimate and the father's name was omitted if he was not present. The child could then have been reregistered at a later date with the same name but the father's name added to the certificate.
