That makes sense Erin

I was reading through info on Proni and missed the section on earlier censuses

It does say that some of the earlier censuses survived

Eringobragh1916 Report 16 Aug 2015 17:14

Gins ...This may clarify the confusion people have over some of what was lost during the destruction of the Four Courts......(1922)

The census returns for 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 were all destroyed in the fire at the Public Records Office in the Four Courts in June 1922 at the outbreak of the Civil War. The returns for 1861 and 1871 were officially destroyed after the extraction of the statistical data, and those for 1881 and 1891 were pulped by the UK authorities during the First World War.
No Census was taken 1921 due to the outbreak of the Civil War and the next one was taken 1926.

Well I didn't know this:

The destruction of census records by Government order

Census returns covering the whole island of Ireland for the years 1861-1891 were destroyed by order of the Government on grounds of confidentiality

I had always been led to believe that they had been destroyed during 'troubles' in Ireland
