My great grandfathers son is a grand father to another person I have just found

what is he to me and to her

confusing isnt it :-S

Your great grandfather's son is your great uncle in the UK

If you've found that he's grandfather to this other person then that's exactly what he is

You share a Great Grandfather so that would make you second cousins. That is if I understood you correctly :-)

I agree with Chris that you are 2nd. cousins with this person that you have just found. Your parents were 1st. cousins and your grandfathers were siblings.

If you share grandparents then you're first cousins, great grandparents it's second cousins and so on.

The removed comes in if your grandparents are the other person's great grandparents.

I find it so easy to calculate without a relationship chart.

You share a gt. grandparent.
Your grandparents are siblings.
Your parents are 1st. cousins.
You are 2nd. cousins.

Now if you each had a child those children would be 3rd. cousins.

Contrary to what your opening post says it is not confusing at all.

Absolutely.

Count the number of g's to your common ancestor
Grand parent = 1 'g'
Great Grandparent = 2 'g's' etc
This gives you the degree of cousins.

So if your common ancestor is your Great, Great, Great Grandfather you are 4th cousins.

Removed comes into place if the no of 'g's' for each of you is different. In that case the smallest gives you the degree of cousins, the difference between the two, the no of generations removed.

So if the common ancestor is your Great Grandfather (2 g's') but the other relatives Great Great Grandfather (3 g's') then your relationship is 2nd Cousin Once removed.
