Had a look at the Bank of England site- it is set for 1750-2014 and that comes out as just under £8,000 :-)

If you google something like "inflation calculator" you will find a number of sites that do the calculation for you. I usually use the Bank of England one. Unfortunately I can't get it to work this morning, possibly because I am on an iPad, so I can't give you the answer.

A Bastardy Bond issued in 1756 for £40 -about how much would that be in todays money ? :-|
