confusing borders and registration districts

Leo76899 Report 9 Sep 2015 22:15

I am looking at a ralph duckers born in 1849.on the 1881 cenus he states he was born in malpas which I believe is/Wad a town or district in Cheshire. I found his his baptism record for malpas which states his parents names. Howeverthere is no birth record for him there. HHowever there is a birth record for his name which states birth Denbigh ire, registration district wrexham. Now to me that would appear to be wales not cheshire. The 1851census shows his name at an adress again relating to denbishire/wrexham and the parents names and the fathers occupation all match that shown for the baptism in malpas. I think it must be the same person. However I am concerning as to why someone could be horn in Wales and be baptised in malpas. I researched the Welsh and cheshire border in 1849 and it seems that some parts of the wales we know today were actually cheshire around that period. But I could jot a clear picture still .... I got so lost in the end doing so much research all at once and it wore me out. Any body got any clued about this? I would be most grateful for your help.

Freebmd is very good for this , eg just putting in as a sample 'Jones, Denbighsihre 1847 , will give you top result

Births Mar 1847 (>99%)
JONES Abednigo Wrexham 27 279

clicking on 'Wrexham" gives a breakdown of the civil parishes which include Malpas, and which county they are in , eg Malpas was ( is) Cheshire , but still under the Wrexham reg district.

lol it is quite confusing the way the borders change, the same applies to areas that might have been Essex but are now London/ Middlesex or vice versa.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 9 Sep 2015 22:39

Wrexham also covers Malpas
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/wrexham.html

Malpas Cheshire 1837-1853
See Table 2, note (a).

Date of change 4.4.1853
(a) Lost the parishes of Agden, Bradley, Chidlow, Chorlton, Cuddington, Malpas, Newton by Malpas, Oldcastle, Overton, Stockton, Wigland, and Wychough, to Whitchurch registration district

Could one of the parents have family in Malpas, hence the baptism there? Might they have moved there sometime before his baptism? Census are a snap-shot in time. Without other records such as the birth reg of siblings, we can't really tell what they've been up to.
We sometimes see that people who spent their formative years in one place think they were born there.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Sep 2015 00:42

that Welsh border region has been confusing even up to fairly recent times.

OH was actually born in Wales, but his birth registration is in Chester .........

........ the nursing home was about 1 mile inside Wales, but the border was moved a few years later and that same nursing home and village ended up in Cheshire.

There is no documentary evidence of his Welsh birth, other than what his parents told him

People did move back and forth between Wales and England, and intermarried.

Have you checked the birth places for his parents???

The local ref typ[ically has 3 elements:
1) a subdistrict (B/D) or marriage place code
2) a register sequence # (within the subdistrict or church)
3) an entry # or local page #. Local rego's have 2 M's or 5 B/D's per page.
The details were copied out for the GRO at the end of each quarter - the GRO pages had twice as many entries per page in the early days.

North Wales Marriage indexes for the years: 1849

ROBERTS Ann C45/03/109
WALKER Margaret C45/03/109

As we see from the local birth index, Ralph was rego'ed in the Malpas subdistrict which was in Wrexham RD at that time.
We can confirm the local ref is our GRO ref as the other names on the GRO page are within 2 local pages (10 entries) of Ralph's local page.

Although, unusually, the local marr ref uses pages rather than entry #s, there is a better than 25% chance the GRO page is misaligned with the local page (will happen if there'd been an odd # of marrs before quarter began), and our marr is the first or last on a full GRO page (it was the first here).
When this happens we can still be sure who wed whom. Richard & Margt got wed at Wrexham, St Giles.

Wrexham itself is in the tongue of Denbigh that separates the two bits of Flint.
Wrexham RD is nominally in Denbigh registration county but, as we see from the NA hit posted above, it spills over into Flint & Cheshire.
In fact, a great many rego districts cross county borders. I would guess there's no historic English or Welsh county that's always been totally covered by RDs that didn't also cover some bit of another county.
