many thanks for the searches, I think I will order Matthew's BC instead, hopefully it will have the mother's maiden name on it.

I found his birth date from the Liverpool Catholic Baptisms records
I am about 80% certain his parents were Philip and Catherine (nee Soraghan)

A slight problem - the quarters run
Jan-Mar
Apr-Jun
Jul-Sep
Oct-Dec

From http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Births Sep 1853 (>99%) (July-Sep)
Clarke John Liverpool 8b 43
Clarke John Liverpool 8b 48
Clarke John Liverpool 8b 176

Births Dec 1853 (>99%) (Oct-Dec)
CLARKE John Liverpool 8b 49

As you can see, there are no births reg in the Apr-Jun quarter. Its possible that one of the Johns was your man as he could have been registered towards the end of the 6 week period but in the following quarter. On the other hand, it wasn't compulsary to register a birth until the mid 1870s!

You could submit an order to GRO specifying the parents names. Where it says 'is the gro ref known?' (or words like that) tick NO.

Have you got him on a census with his parents? if so who are they?

you can search on freebmd for index if you want to look for yourself. His birth may not have been registered.

I want to order a birth certificate for a John Clarke, Liverpool , the date of birth 17th May 1853, would this be under the June-July-Aug quarter, as there is no March-April-May quarter for my ancestor's date of birth.
