Thank you to Andrew for posting the link re children's home records.

Think I might have found something relevant, but would just like to know if anyone has any idea how old a child would have needed to be in 1895 to leave the workhouse at their own request, as stated in the Discharge register for Homerton Workhouse.

Many thanks,

Sue

From this article

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/education/

it sounds as if they could leave when they were old enough to work - about 14.

12 was the school leaving age at least as late as 1916 .................. as long as they had accrued the correct number of days.

I have both my mother's (1915) and my father's (1916) certificates that showed they could leave school and start work.

Other children started work much younger of course.

I have ancestors in the 1901 census who were working away from home as servants at the age of 10.

Many thanks for the information.

If I have found the correct information, it shows my great aunt's discharge from the workhouse aged 14. Haven't been able to find a corresponding admission record though, does anyone know if it would it have given her date of birth, please?

Thanks,

Sue

Not usually, just their age or age by appearance. It may say why they were admitted eg orphan, pauper, to infirmary, or brought by police.

Try tracking down where the workhouse records are held. Once you've done that, you may have to search the admission books (if they survive) in person. Only a small percentage of records are on line

Homerton records are likely to be at the London Metropolitan Archives.
