I am searching for Stephen Kemp born 1812 Woodnesborough Kent on the 1841 census, I have found him ok on the 1851 census living in Liverpool. He was married in Liverpool in 1836 to Rosanna Mcgraa at St. Peter's C of E church. There is no sign of them on the 1841 census anywhere in England.. He was a mariner. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Perhaps he was at sea, and she was allowed to go with him ???

She seems to be on her own in 1871 and widowed by 1881:

Thanks for all the help. I have all this information already thanks, its just the 1841 census that appears to be missing. "Patchem" if it's The Banks Family tree, then yes, it's my tree. Perhaps as a mariner, he and his wife along with their first child Susanna born 1837, were at sea. Where mariners allowed to take their wives and children to sea?

It would be interesting to check that to give an idea if the family had moved.

James was 21 months old at death so born around August 1840.

Whilst women did sometimes accompany their husbands to sea (although there had been superstitions amongst sailors considering it unlucky to have women on board) I'm not sure that a toddler and infant would have been practical? Hard to say.

Thanks, on Stephen's birth certificate they were living at Freemasons Row, and just to make things more complicated, the mothers maiden name was recorded as Kemp and not Mcgraa. The registrar may have put her married name down in error.
