Hi can any one help me, I have a marriage certificate for one of my ancestors,
James Grimshaw married in Hampton Parish Church 17th July 1842.
His father is noted as Samuel Grimshaw Labourer, if it doesn't say dec. as I have seen in some more recent certificates, does that mean he was alive on the day?
I am asking this because I have come to a fall stop with Samuel, the last info I have on him is James's baptism March 1818 in Twickenham.

No, unfortunately, it does not mean that he was alive or deceased.

The absence of "deceased" on the certificate means one of two things .........

1. The Vicar did not ask the correct question, ie, he did not specifically ask if the father was alive or dead.

If he asked "what is your father's name and his occupation?" ..... many people did not add that extra information that "but he's dead"

2. The father had left home, had no contact with the children, and so it was not known whether he was alive or dead.


On the other hand ........... you also cannot also trust that a father said to be dead really was dead!

My brother, photo taken in September 1991 just a couple of weeks before he died. ............................................................ To help us and to get better results, please post as much detail as you can, especially name, date(s) and place. Also say what you already know.

When my grandmother's brother married in 1917, their father (estranged from the family) was marked as deceased on the marriage cert.

In fact, he didn't die until 1943.

Researching:
Old genealogists never die.....they just lose their census.
