Today is my last day, since I am not renewing my sub.
I would like to thank the members who have helped with my research over the years, and I hope that on occasions I have helped others too.

My opinion is that this site has gone to the dogs and for what it offers it is not now worth paying for, since the well-known alternative genealogy forum - totally free - knocks spots off this one. This site is chaotic due to lack of moderation and primitive. The main selling point of the Genes organisation, but you can't even quote a message or add an image to your post. Ridiculous.

Unfortunately I think it's now too late to do anything about Genes. Nobody in the company which runs it is in the slightest bit interested in the site. The community manager has left, gone into hiding or been sacked, the suggestions board is a joke, the home page is weeks out of date.... etc. etc. etc. It's nothing to do with finance since the other site doesn't charge and has a proper, modern setup.

If I was in charge, after a total make over and face lift the Announcements, Success Board, Hobbies, Quizzes, Suggestions and WDYTYA boards would all be scrapped. I would personally also do away with the Living Relatives board but of course this is a good money spinner since the advent of the tear-jerker realities on TV.
(By the way can anyone explain why you get jumped on from a great height like a naughty child if you dare to post a birth reference from FreeBMD from say the 1940's but it's OK to mention all the details of someone's life on the Living Relatives board??)

Anyway I'm keeping my tree up to date on here in the vain hope that someone researching my lot might one day get in touch (which I doubt) but I'm going to save my 22€ for something else. And yes it annoys me incredibly that I pay nearly three times as much as other people for the same service. Good luck to those of you who get it cheap!

Happy hunting to all
Beverley

I can't disagree with much of what you say Beverley, but it's always sad to see another one go.

Best of luck, hopefully someone will get in touch one day and you'll return to tell everyone not to give up hope :-)

Totally agree with what you say Beverley esp. re all the totally unconnected Boards you mention. I would however add the Book Club to your list as just can't see what on earth is the relevance of that as it doesn't even seem to be devoted to Fam. History books, which could be of some use. There are plenty of other Book Club sites for people who want them, without wasting resources on here which is supposed to be a dedicated genealogy site.

Thanks for the info on the Genealogy Forum; great site- even the SEARCH function works.

Probably see you over there. I definitely won't be renewing here.

GR's fate was sealed when BS were allowed to buy it and added it to their stable of family history sites ................

I was told back in May that discussions had been on-going for "a couple of months" regarding the future direction that GR was going to take.

Seems they're either still discussing, or have given up .........

.......... that or everyone has been seconded over to FMP to help the release of the 1939 Records.

About 10 years ago I was researching one of my lines from Lancashire. I happened across Cemsearch.co.uk and paid for data on two surnames on MI's in Blackburn old cemetery. This resulted in a trip to Blackburn and finding the graves of g3gp's, plus other relations.

I have just checked the website. It is still up, but it looks as if the two ladies that ran it have not put anything new on for a long time. Maybe the site is simply sitting on some server(s) somewhere. And might continue to do so unless something untoward happens.

And GR? Well, they are still collecting subscriptions. But that is an automatic process? So maybe there is nobody left.......Except a caretaker for the server. Unless of course GR is hosted on other BS servers.....
