I'm so sorry I didn't know I had any more posts after 3rd Dec. When I looked just now I can see you have all been trying to help me. Thanks so much.
Williams birth cert shows his mother as Mary Stewart widow nee McGregor. William dad is unknown. He is called William McGregor on his birth cert.

He did have lots of siblings but the father unknown.
Thanks to ArgyllGran-you spent your credits checking this out.

Yes, sorry, Chris - didn't notice that birth reference.
That would make him 26 in 1911.

Well, only one of those 14 William McGregors was 26 in 1911, but didn't live in Dudhope Crescent.
So there's no way of finding out who lived there in either 1911 or 1918, Rosalinda.

Just in case it's relevant, and as I've spent the credits, I might as well give the details of the 26-yr-old in 1911:

Address: 139 Hilltown (seems to be a tenement of flats - several households at the same address).
The McGregors had 2 rooms with one or more windows.
All members born Dundee (so presumably not the right William, as Rosalinda said born Blairgowrie.)

William McGregor, head, 26, packer in jute industry,
Margaret, wife, 25, married 5 years, 4 children, all living,
Bella, daughter, 4
Margaret, daughter, 2
Jane, daughter, 2
John, son, 8 months.

(not sure AG, but did wonder if he was the one above?, bit of a long 'Thread'!, I did post that Birth reference earlier to a William from it)

There were 14 William McGregors living in Dundee in 1911, between the ages of 10 and 40.(Per ScotlandsPeople)

Can't tell their addresses without spending credits on each one.
If we knew his age, it would be possible to narrow it down a bit first.

Is this some relation?? Lived at 2 Upper Dudhope Cres in 1841, apparently:

For address search, wondered if it should be Dudhope Crescent?, google brings that up for Dundee (also being Dudhope Crescent Road)

Chris, this is not the same William McGregor. I found a William McGregor on the Long lost trail living at 2 Dunhope Cres Dundee in 1918. He was a private in the Royal Scots Fusiliers as was my William McGregor so I have been trying to find his service number on Ancestry to see if it's the same on as the one on Long Lost Trail. I know he was married and possibly had a son and a daughter (from his inquest report) but I don't know their names.

rootgatherer Report 8 Apr 2011 12:21

Had a look on Ancestry for possible service records of William. The problem is we don't know if he enlisted as Stewart or McGregor but it may be worth checking this one out to see if it is your William?

Name: William McGregor
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1886
Age at enlistment: 29
Residence: 27 Patons Lane, Dundee
Document Year: 1915
Regimental Number: 3772
Regiment Name: A & SH
Number of images: 14

This one married Ella Barry Parker in Dundee on 3rd October 1913 and there is one son listed - William Parker born 9 November 1914.

If you look up the marriage on Scotlandspeople you will get his parents names.
