I went with my brother to Devon record office last year and they allowed us to photograph documents with no charge as long as we didn't use flash. As Argyllgran said, its's probably best to contact any record offices you want to visit and ask them what their policy is.

On my last visit to the London Metropolitan Archives I paid a nominal fee, which entitled me to take photos. The only condition was that I could not use flash.

I have never used a hand scanner, but I suspect that it would not be allowed as many original items are quite flimsy. And large.

Best to ask the library or office concerned what they permit .
Rules will vary from place to place.

On the other hand, I know my cousin did surreptitiously manage to photograph documents with his phone in one library which didn't permit it.

Not that I would ever suggest you should break the rules!

Hi, looking for some thoughts about copying documents for family history purposes on visits to libraries, records offices & the like. Whilst some things can be printed because they are fiche or micro-film, and others photo-copied, many items don't fall into either category. What do folk find the most sucessful and convenient? I am wondering whether to go for a hand held scanner or whether photographing works ok where hand written documents are concerned? With hand held scanners, has anyone experienced problems being allowed to use them?
