Hi greyghost this is the correct family. I find it so difficult to search in Ireland from England. There are other members of this family who I'm stuck on too. Rome wasn't built in a day. Thanks for your continued help.

Hi all, thanks for your time and help. Yes, so far as I know Macroom is in Cork. Yes, that is my James in Ancestry but I never have much luck in responses from messages posted on there. I find members on GR are always very helpful.

Kind regards

Kathryn

You can look at the 1901 and 1911 census of Ireland at this site for free

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie

There are many Margaret O'Sullivans in County Cork aged 18-28 in 1901

1901 does give a James Brown (no E) in Macroom, but aged only 19. Catherine aged 30 can't be mother to James, so perhaps a second wife?

is it at all possible that James married Margaret O'Sullivan during or after WW1, and that she was a widow ............... so that O'Sullivan is not her maiden name?

Is Macroom in Cork?

Only about 30% of the WW1 records for servicemen have survived in any form. Most of them are damaged and burnt.

We are very lucky if we find even a scrap of record remaining, which is very unfortunate for us.

???? A possible if Oxford as opposed to Oxfordshire - born Q4 1879 would make him 68 in Q3 1948 for death. The certificate may show a relative registering the death.

My grand uncle, James Brown(e) with or without the e was born in November 1879 in Ireland. I have now been informed that he married a lady from Cork, one Margaret O'Sullivan. James apparently went off to war and upon returning lived in Oxford for the remainder of his life. They had a son also called James, nothing else known about him. I have tried searching for James Snr's marriage but cannot find it or locating a death for him in Oxford. I have his birth date as being 21 November 1879 born in Macroom, Ireland. Am wondering if anyone could please find his marriage whether it be in Ireland or England. I have also tried to find a service record for him but have hit my head against a brick wall.

As ever any help would be greatly appreciated albeit there is not much to go on.

Regards

Kathryn
