Which is the best way to make contact with relatives on this site. Its all a little confusing at present.

If you've searched all members trees for a given name, there'll be a button next to the owners name saying 'find out more'. Click on that and send them a message.

Give the name of the mutual ancestor and explain the relationship to either yourself, or to someone else in your tree. Ask them if they have any further info they can share.

Don't, what ever you do, use the suggested 'can I see your tree?' suggestion given by the ste. Many people ignore blunt requests without a background explanation.

John - for some reason you've allowed me access to your 'Keepsafe'. :-)

When you post on the Boards, its really better to add replies on the thread - just use the 'Add your reply' box at the end of the (last) page.

To send another poster a personal message - aka PM - you click on their name or the 'send message' box which appears when you hover your cursor over their avatar (profile picture)

To reiterate how to contact people who list the same ancestors as yourself.
Go to Search all member Trees - top right under search.
Enter the ancestors name, year and place of birth then press 'Search'.
With a bit of luck, you will be presented with a list which the system believes match the search parameters.
Eg, if I were to search for John Mears with no other details, there are over 300 results. Adding a year of birth would reduce the number, as would the place of birth.
Do bear in mind that many researchers don't know the exact place of birth, so may state eg Scotland rather than Edinburgh.

As an experiment, one result was
John Mears 1849 Oxborough Norfolk ... Ivan Find out more
If I believed Ivan had the same name as in my tree, I'd click on the 'find out more' button to send him a message

John - you are not reading messages and not returning to your postings to see what people have found for you

I have messaged you telling you I do not have a keepsafe and that we are not connected

Ann :-)

Hello John,

If you go to the 'My threads' option under 'Tools' at left of page and find your thread on General chat, you will be able to click on 'Romany Star's name and send her a message, as she has replied there , assuming you or Romany haven't already done so of course :-)

Click on this turquoise link and it will take you straight to that thread
