Hi
My 3x Great grandfather Pattison Newton was killed at
Walbottle colliery on Tyneside,in 1858, the Death cert says Fall of Stone.
the coroner was S Reed of Newcastle.
Could anyone tell me if I would be allowed a copy of this report and how or where would I find it. He was a Blacksmith by trade but was classified as Pitman on the death cert.
Any ideas

I doubt that the coroner's report has survived but you might find a mention of the case in the local newspaper either on the day of the inquest or very soon afterwards.

I would check with the local reference library to see if they have copies.

Service, Blandford House, Newcastle, telephone 0191 232 6789.

They are very friendly and helpful (in my experience) and will point you
in the right direction if they don't have what you want themselves

On average, you will get more detailed information from newspaper reports
as not all records are retained by coroners, even before they are old enough
to be considered as "historical" information.

The only dates shown for Newcastle on Tyne are 1939-1969.

There is a standard 75 year closure applicable to coroners' records.

I found a report on my gt grandfather's death in a local newspaper.

Contact the Local Studies and Archives, give them the date of death and date of inquest and ask if they can do a search of newspapers for 2 or 3 weeks after the dates. Also ask if they can send you a photocopy of the article if one is found

There may be a charge or not. I was lucky, they not only didn't charge me for anything, not even the air mail cost to Canada.

But be prepared .............. newspaper reports were much more gory then than they are now.


I've also found newspaper reports of the suicides of 2 young women, cousins, in OH's tree ........... one committed suicide after she thought her fiance no longer loved her, the other because she had been accused of theft. Those reports were found in British Newspapers Online.

I gave Durham Mining museum the info re my ancesters
I have been onto the Coroner's office in Newcastle unfortunately they don't have any archives going back to 1858.
I have checked the local Newspapers of the time and cant find any mention of it.
I noticed on DMM site that it mentioned a mines report I may have to go down that avenue
