Hi there Thomas, I have some ideas for you to try other than only the censuses if, that is, my ideas are in line with what you are trying to find out. If I am missing the mark just ignore this message. Did I read your posting correctly, that Bertha Edna Whitehead nee Granger was born in 1908? If so then the census listings are no use to you for her. Thomas, can I suggest you begin with the known. Have I got it right that you do have Bertha's birth certificate and at least a partial address for her? Are you able to find any information which adds to that? Do you have anybody you can ask, such as an elderly Auntie who could have known Bertha and her family? Is there anything buried away in old family photographs? If you know a name of a sibling of Bertha's and you can sight the sibling's birth record, their father's name might be on that one even though he is not named on Bertha's birth certificate. Can you find anyone else who is researching your family; perhaps another branch of it but they might have the info you want. What about potential resources such as GOONS (One Name Studies), and the local Family History Society or library. At the same time as doing the above, are you able to access census records yourself. Perhaps you could do so, beginning with all Grangers living in the right locality, and beginning at the 1901 census. What about the Whiteheads too? If you do that you might not know to start of with exactly who is who in the families, but you will begin to get a feel for the whole, wider family as well as gathering information. When I have researched by that way it has been surprisingly helpful to me. Often you come across things like a 'widowed father of the household head' which takes you into the earlier generation. Relationships like an in-law or a married daughter boarding at her parent's home can reveal the married names of family members. Very helpful. Just play around with it. As you become familiar with a family over a few generations you start to pick-up on their traits. For example, does this family often name their daughters Bertha Edna? If they do you will know there were possibly a few mothers, cousins, aunts or sisters named Bertha Edna Granger. Finally, knowing the customs related to naming patterns, such as naming the 1st son after the father, can be helpful. It can also hinder research because not everyone followed the customs of their day. It pays to not be rigid about those things. I want to confirm to you that, yes, people often named their children after their siblings, and they sometimes even gave siblings the same name as each other. Although that last is not a common practice in our own generation, I believe some families do so even today. Wishing you every success in finding your family, cheerio, from Christine.

It is her brother but how does this confuse? As far as I can see the Sarah in 1901 is the same girl as 1891. 1881 Emely J.
