Hi all of you
Sorry I did not pick this up again but Life took unexpected turns and I had to do other things. Now back hunting and have just re-found these posts - I forgot I had posted them. Thanks for your help all of you - even if a whole year late in getting back.
I need to sort out my records and find out where the Mayo came from - unfortunately my mother was a fantasist and so what ever she said (about my grandfather's roots) needs checking!!!!
The lead from "Donegal" looks promising but costs 20 euros so I need to see if I can find out if that Thomas's father was Samuel and if so I will definately lash out and buy it!
Thanks again to all who bothered to reply and humble apologies again.
Sandra

hi there, My grandfathers family came from county mayo too and moved to Scotland not long after the potato famine. A lot of Irish records were destroyed but you can get some information. Keep trying and ask lots of people for help in the looking for column of genes. Good luck Ally.

Where was Thomas Fred Moore in 1901. Mayo is in West of Ireland whereas there are a lot of Moores in Northern Ireland.(Antrim etc) Where did you see the county Mayo? Have you a death cert for Thomas? That should give place of birth. There is a leitrim Roscommon site that has links and Connorsgenealogy that also has Mayo links. Have you tried A2A archives for further info on Thomas Fred. M

Irish ancestors are not easy to find Im afraid - try entering Irish or Ireland in the search box at the top of this page to get tips on researching them. Meanwhile, a google search has thrown up this County Mayo link: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/irl/MAY/index.html

Can anyone give me advice on how to track my grandfather 's side of the family with very ittle info? Thomas Frederick Moore(always called Fred) b about 1883 in somewhere that looks like Mayo, Ireland? I have his marriage cert so have a father named Samuel who was dead by wedding (1912 in east London). He lived in East London/Essex after that. He was a civil servant in England and awarded the MBE in or just after WWII (probably for long service) but I was wondering if it is possible to find out when and why. (tried London Gazette and couldn't find it). The King was not able to present the medal which is why I am dating it as between 1940 and 1952. Does the fact that he was in the English Civil service means he had to be from Northern Ireland? Any help gratefully received Sandra
