Is there ay where to find records of Morchard Devon before 1650? I have looked at 2 film's there appears to be non before 1650, where can I find family before that? Mary |

Hi Mary If you visit this site http://www.parishregister.co.uk/history.htm a short history will explain the dates parish registers began and why they are scarce before 1650. For earlier records you will need to find the manorial rolls or other records of the local manor. You may not find births deaths and marriages there, but there might be mentions of your ancestors. You need to find out when this church was built - I suspect 1650 - and find out which church was used before that. The County Records Office should be able to help you, if google doesn't! OC |

They were born St Mary's Church of England Morchard Bishop from 1650, have found them from 1650 -1850, Thankyou. Mary |

Mary There are records for Cruwys Morchard from 1554, according to the LDS library. As I thought, the previous parish church was burnt down and St Mary seems to have been a replacement church built in the 1600s. And try googling - I came up with loads of hits for people who are doing very early research in this parish - it is well served with Manorial records. OC |
