Help with 'alias' in parish registers

Thanks Alexandra - there are a few John Roses and John Ridouts in the records though!! Still I'll keep plugging away - thanks for the tips!

It is possible his mothers maiden name was Ridout and possibly he was born illegitimate and then his mother married. Or he was born illegitimate as Rose but his fathers name was Ridout. It is also possible that Ridout is another name in his family that he used from time to time. Might be worth tracking down his baptism if possible - that might shed some light on it.

Can any of you clever people help. I've located the marriage of one of my ancestors in the Dorset parish registers and it had his name listed as John Rose alias Ridout. Both Rose and Ridout are fairly common Dorset names but could anyone shed light on why he would change names, use both etc. Could his mothers name possibly be Ridout. Hope someone can help! BR
