On 1881 Canadian census, John Ovens, age 70, was head of household and living with the family was Jennie Stinson, age 20 (doesn't show relationship although we are fairly certain she was related). We are fairly positive John was born in Co. Fermanaugh, Ireland. Baptised in Co. Fermanaugh was a John Ovens, about the same age as the John mentioned above; mother was Elizabeth Stinson. Ovens is/was not a common name. Do you think I’ve found his mother? Seems too coincidental (perhaps Jennie was a niece). Opinions greatly appreciated, please. |

Hi Lisa , well the cross ref to Stinson certainly seems to be some sort of match I would put this in my maybe file till it comes up with further proof. Have you found any of them in earlier census's other than the Canada one Ps they are showing on the familysearch site too Johns father William Ovens mother Elizabeth Stinson. Bro Alexander baptised 11.9.1803. sister Anne baptised 3.5.1807 John baptised23.6.1811 all at Inishmacsaint Donegal Ireland Is submiited info tho not parish records |

Hi Shirley. Unfortunately, I cannot view the 1871 Canadian census and there isn’t a Canadian census for 1860. I believe Jennie is buried in the Ovens plot. Thank you for looking at the LDS information. I don’t know who added that information to the LDS records but it is from Inishmacsaint baptisms. I just am not sure it’s regarding MY ancestor (John). I’ve only found three Ovens descendants in North America and they aren’t sure about our connection to Co. Fermanaugh (or each other!) so I don’t believe the information came from “here”. Thank you for mentioning the LDS information – I will see if I can find out who submitted it!!! Thank you! |

I noticed, Lisa, that your Jennie Stinson was born in Ontario, so wondered where her parents were. Thought if I could find, on the 81 census any Stinsons born in Ireland they might possibly be her parents. Bad idea! There are loads of Stinsons in Ontario born in Ireland. I then checked Ovens and there are also a pile of them born in Ireland. No help. Sorry! Margaret |

Hi Margaret: I never realized there were so many Ovens! I know quite a few of them are related to my two Ontario contacts. I don't know how the others fit in, though. Unfortunately, the person who could tell me if my John is the son of Elizabeth has not been answering my emails. (I'm hoping he is ok.) Perhaps I can sort through the Ovens in 1881 and see if I can come up with any clues. Thank you for looking, it is really appreciated! |
