Tracing a marriage

How do I trace an ancesters marriage if I only have the grooms name and the brides surname but not her maiden name or the year of their marriage

what clues do you have ? a time frame , if even a loose one? the approx date depends on where you look

Have you tried tracing any of their children's baptisms or birth entries? Were they around for any of the census reports? or was this before 1841?
