I received my husbands grandparents marriage certificate, and then decided to get his grandfathers birth certificate it gave me his mother and fathers names and the fathers name being the same as on his marriage certificate, the certificate was written out of the 4th feb 1907, he was born on the 9th jan 1907. he was definatly thomas chamber galbraith and the name is the same on the death register he died in 1976, now i have been told that he was adopted, will he have 2 birth certs I have found also that his parents didn,t marry until 3 years later but the birth cert has his mothers name down as galbraith formerly gardner. i have been told that I have the wrong person but all the dates birth and death say not.please can anyone give me a clue regards janet

What were his parents names? There is this marriage: Surname First name(s) District Vol Page -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Mar 1910 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GALBRAITH James Newcastle T. 10b 119 GARDNER Sarah Ann Newcastle T. 10b 119 They could always have fibbed when they registered Thomas and said that they were married when they weren't, I doubt they would have been asked for proof. Hi Janet Janet, Who told you you were wrong? Did he confirm he was adopted or was it just 'family knowledge'. If we go by that 8 out of 9 of my aunts/uncles didn't belong to my grandfather. You can only go by the records unless you got it from the horses mouth. But even there - my mother-in-law insisted her mother's maiden name was Summers (strange she didn't mention that when my daughter married a Summers) - turned out to be Cousins. I would suggest you go back to the local Register Office and ask if they have him as adopted. Kristeen

The parents of thomas chambers galbraith were supposed to be sarah ann formerly gardner and james galbraith, I had mentioned that i was tracing their family history to my husbands cousin and she has been told since that thomas was adopted, my husbands aunt said that she did,nt know much about it buy his name was possibly anderson. regards janet thanks for the advice

Hi There were no legal adoptions before 1927, a child would be taken on by a family and the name changed without any adoption record being made

Perhaps your informant meant he was adopted OUT of the family, rather than into it? You seem to have the right birth cert. Perhaps he went to another family before his parents married? But if he WAS unofficially adopted into the family, then I really don't know how you would find out, because his 'adoptive' parents have registered him as their own child. OC
