Can anybody tell me what a Surface Horker is please, It appears on a marriage cert I recently received as the employment of my relative |

Guessing, because i dont know! 'Surface' suggests others did the same thing underground (ie he did it above ground) although what 'Horking' is I have no idea! Was it a mining area? can you cross ref with a census occupation - or is the time not appropriate for that? Not a 'surace Hooker' is it? that was to do with the weaving industry |

Hi Margaret I think ( I'm no expert though) that it may say 'Surface Worker' implying he worked above ground at a coal mine. Hope that helps Jo |

Does he appear on the census anywhere so you could check on there? But I too think its likely you have misread an H for a W and its a labourer at a mine who doesnt go underground. Does mining fit in for the area he lived in? |
