I think this is related to Christine's earlier thread called 'All searched out, genius wanted'. She can't find the family in 1891. Chris

Yes it does relate to genius wanted. I was trying to lay it out so you could read it, another miserable failure! Thank you all Chris

Well, a very kind soul on the family tree forum says they are in Bradford in 1891 and in Manchester in 1901: 1891: RG12/3258/47/34 Oops, I just looked at that and its one I discounted earlier. Not sure about it at all Im afraid. Wrong ages, wrong place of birth for wife and none of the previous kids there. Erm, nope, dont think its them!

Chris in Shropshire Report 7 Apr 2007 23:57

Thanks Heather I think they (without wife Mary who I think had died) were definitely in Wolverhampton in 1901 so I think the Manchester ones have to be discounted. I am beginning to think they managed to avoid the 1891 census altogether but so far I get the impression they weren't very keen on documentation in any shape or form! Chris

Thanks for looking Glitter Baby, the family was certainly split up by 1901, Owen living with married daughter Mary so Annie could well have been boarded out. Now I've had a look I see she is next door but one to father Owen. I should have noticed it but I hadn't (spelt differently as well) Many thanks Chris

Sorry, been away, yes, Merry on FTMFhas same conclusion: I am really sure that is the right Owen in 1901 now. He is a boarder with Joseph Beddows and his wife Mary Beddows. Mrs Beddows is Owen's daughter: Marriages Q4 1896 Beddows Joseph Wolverhampton 6b 1126 COONEY Mary Agnes Wolverhampton 6b 1126 Jones Alfred Wolverhampton 6b 1126 Stych Ann Maria Wolverhampton 6b 1126 and as I said, his other dau Annie is nextdoor. and here is his dau's birth. I had thought Mary A would be Mary Ann, but it isn't! Births Q3 1871 COONEY Mary Agnes Wolverhampton 6b 457 This date ties in with the 1881 census record. I still don't know where they are in 1891, but my guess is they were living in a court in Wolverhampton like they were in 1881 (very poor housing) and are just missed off the census or the page is lost, or whatever.

Some more info from two sleuths on FTF! If its of any help! I still think that Owen I found in 1901 still in Wolverhampton is the one you are looking for and this is the death of his wife in Wolverhampton also: Deaths Q3 1895 Cooney Mary 43 Wolverhampton 6b 328 I can only see 1 marriage for an Owen coon*y 1871-1891. JAS 1876 chorlton 8c/1050 to mary mcdermott (and mcdermott is the name of the nurse child patrick who is in the family on the 1891)

Chris in Shropshire Report 8 Apr 2007 17:24

Thanks Heather for all your help. I have decided to give up on the 1891 unless I get a lead in the future but I think they just missed it since they hadn't moved around much. The nurse child you mention , was he with the Manchester Cooneys otherwise I am confused Thanks Chris

One (possibly daft) final question I hope Is the transcription on Ancestry the only one, in other words could the page be on any other site you can look at? (if it was missed during the transcription process that is) Chris
