igi batch numbers

why do the batch numbers for great wolford warwickshire on the family search site go from 1612 to 1700 and then strat again in 1812, i need to look during the time where no batch numbers can be found |

Robert It means that no one has transcribed the records for that date, that's all. I am sure they would be utterly delighted if you volunteered, as that is the only way data ever gets onto the IGI. And if it isnt on the IGI, then Hugh Wallis won't find it - Hugh Wallis is merely an index of SOME of the parish registers which have been transcribed onto the IGI. The LDS may hold the missing years on film, and you can view that at your nearest LDS centre for a few pounds - check their library to see if they have the relevant years. OC |

OC or anyone else out there who knows, I have just had contact from the daughter of a half- sister of my Mum's, which was a bit of a shock as my Mum had no idea she had half-brothers or sisters. Anyway, it turns out that an entry on the IGI which I had been pinning some hope on, was actually entered by her. Can anybody add an entry, and if so, how do you know whether it has actually been transcribed from parish records or just added by some well-meaning person? |

IGI has two main types of records - EXTRACTED and SUBMITTED. Extracted records are taken from parish registers and can be cautiously assumed to have happened - they are however subject to all the errors of transcription that any other transcribed record is, and should be checked against the original parish register. Submitted records are just that - anybody in the world can submit a record to the IGI. No one checks it and it doesnt have to be based even remotely on fact, let alone proven information. I generally ignore submitted records unless I am really desperate for a lead, and in that case, carefully check them, ignoring anything which says 'about' rather than a specific date - it means they don't know, they are guessing. It will always say on the page, something like 'extracted from the Parish Register' and give a batch number which corresponds with the church records. If it doesnt say 'extracted' anywhere on the page, then it is submitted, with all the many pitfalls of a submitted record. OC |
