Fox On The Rocks Report 6 Apr 2007 17:48

I am trying to locate the birth of Mary Docherty (surname variants of Doherty and dougherty). She was born about 1855 and census' say she was born in edinburgh (College wynd on one, Pleasance on another). Her parents were Anthony (sometimes andrew) Docherty and Bridget Wynn. They were either married in 1850 or 1858 (ive had both dates), I think in May, in Edinburgh. As they were probably roman catholics, I am having trouble locating the marriage! Im trying to figure out which year they did marry. They had two more children before 1858, but on both certs. they just state the mothers maiden name, not if they were married or not. They were both named as Doherty/dougherty. Ive looked for both the birth and marriage cert. EVERY WHERE, but have had no luck. If anyone can help me, id be most greatful. This has been driving me crazy for months!!!

I think they where most likely married before 1855 as a search on Scotlandspeople for a marriage of a Bridget Wynn/Winn turns up 17 matches between 1855 and 1931 and none marry a Docherty or an Andrew/Antony Most likey is that Mary was born before 1855, probably 1854. If they where catholic then the birth/marriage wont appear in the usual records and you will have to get in touch with the catholic archives in Edinburgh. Mhairi

When you say that the certs dont show if they where married or not...does the mothers name appear Bridget Doucherty ms Wynn? If so then i would say that they are married, usually if they are not then the birth cert will say illegitimate and the mother would just be down as Bridget Wynn. Mhairi

Thank you donegal girl, but that one isnt her. Her next brother was born in august 1856 and according to the IGI, That Mary was born in June and also had different parents.

Mhari, Sorry, got it wrong. The cert in 1856 just state the mothers maiden name. It doesnt say either child is illegitamate (i have other illegitamate children in the family, and they all state as such). There are two other entries on the page, and they are both the same. The other cert in 1858 state her name as Docherty M.S Wynn. I have looked at the Catholic herritage site, but I got a bit lost! (im not so good on computers, but im getting the hang of it slowly!).

This should be the page you need http://www.catholic-heritage.net/sca/genealogy-pr.htm But they dont seem to hold any records for Edinburgh...hmmm Looks like they are held by the National Archives of Scotland. RefNo Title Date RH21 Roman Catholic Baptismal and Marriage Etc Registers 1703-1976 RH21/74 Edinburgh (St Marys) Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh 1777-1979 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CountryCode GB RepCode 234 RefNo RH21/74/1 Repository National Archives of Scotland Title Edinburgh (St Marys) Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh, Index of Baptisms & Marriages, 1777-1979 Date 1777-1979 Description Index of Baptisms 1777-1979 Index of Marriages 1780-1979 AccessStatus Open Copying There are restrictions on the provision of copies from this register. Researchers wishing to purchase copies will be allowed a maximum of 10 pages only. These copies must be for private research only. I will be making a trip to the NAS some time in the future and would be willing to do a look up but if you'd like if sooner then i suggest signing up for and putting a request in their tier three section on this website http://scotfamtree.11.forumer(.)com They should be able to help you if you cant make it to the archives youself Mhairi
