opening your tree

I got a message from someone I know telling me 'this is not my relative' She got a message from me asking for tree access. Neither of these were generated by us. The updating of the system has somehow caused a glitch.

Thing is Reg, I had no messages, so had none to delete. I can't explain how I suddenly have new names in my messages/shared tree section. I didnt put them there. They just appeared with a recommendation that these trees are similar to yours.

I think half the people who use these boards have had these 'tree shared' messages...........they arise when someone clicks on the wrong 'button' on the contact centre message system. Just delete the messages............... Reg

Ah ...after reading this I zipped off to look at who can see my tree, and I noticed people on the list I had not messaged nor had they messaged me. It seems its a genes update where you just click and request to see tree. Example...I have a name lets say 'Joe Bloggs', in my contact/shared trees list, but neither 'Joe Bloggs' or myself had initiated this. Then if I click his name, it says...this tree has strong links with yours. Then you can click to request to see tree. So actually its the site that is in a way promoting this. New users may think it's the thing to do.

I got a message from someone who I have never had contact with asking through a Genes automatic message for me to open my tree. There was not even a name in the box to say what match there was. I sent a polite message back asking who they were interested and telling them that unless I knew there was a connection I do not open my tree. Christine

For the last few days I have been getting messages which simply state that someone has given me access to their tree, There is often a second message asking me to give access to mine too. I haven't contacted these people previously, am I on their 'Hot Matches' list? If so, why don't they send a proper query? Also, considering all the discussion about 'treenappers' and identity theft aren't these people being rather hasty with opening their tree up without even being asked to do so? Has anyone else experienced this?
