I have a birth cert puzzle. On the cert. I have just received the child has the fathers surname, but no fathers name is on the cert. I know the parents weren’t married at the time of the birth. This is a birth which has taken place in the last two years. Any ideas |

was the mothers name correct Another thought if its in the christian name part then the mum has given the dads surname as a christian name. So for instance christian names Bloggs smith - mother surname jones S o the childs full name is Bloggs Smith Jones |

If the birth has taken place in the last 2 years and the father's name is not on the birth certificate; it could be because the mother did not wish for the father to be named on the birth certificate. Regards Rachel |

Although the parents were/are together he was married to somebody else at the time of the birth, could be that. She don't know how his surname turned up on there though |

If your not married you can't enter the fathers name unless he attends or makes a statutory declaration for the mother to take to the registrar. The child can still take the fathers name. Bob |

sounds like a misunderstanding by the registrar who must have told the dads name otherwise how would he know. Seems he may have thought the child was being named with dads surname as a second christian name Shirley |

If the parents are unmarried, the father has to be there at the registration for him to be named on the birth certificate. Jennifer |

Nowadays a child has a surname shown on a birth certificate, whereas it used to just be implied, ( from the father's name or mother's surname if no father was recorded) A couple can decide on either surname ( or any other they choose, I believe) Gwyn |
