Just had an automatic windows update and machine shut down to restart afterwards. But when I went back on a notice came up saying RTHDCPL.EXE - Illegal System DLL Relocation. The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occured because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL. ********* Help! what should I do? what is a DLL?

Often, if you enter that message info in a google search someone else will have asked for help on it and there will be a cure - have a go. :)

Oh well at least I'm not alone. Will google it and see if I can find out anything. At the moment think I will ignore it and wait till hubby gets home, not that he will have any better idea than me. Now lets get ready to go to the dentist and get my filling done, hate dentists, much courage needed.

Process File Name: rthdcpl or rthdcpl.exe Process Name: Realtek HD Audio Sound Effect Manager Description: The rthdcpl.exe process is present after the connection of Realtek sound cards. It works with the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel and audio hardware. While this process is not essential, it should only be stopped or disabled if it is suspected to be the cause of system problems. So you may have problems with your sound if so you will need to go here and download a new one. http://www.realtek*com*tw Sxx

Oh a DLL file In a nut shell, a dynamic link library (DLL) is a collection of small programs, which can be called upon when needed by the executable program (EXE) that is running. The DLL lets the executable communicate with a specific device such as a printer or may contain source code to do particular functions. An example would be if the program (exe) needs to get the free space of your hard drive. It can call the DLL file that contains the function with parameters and a call function. The DLL will then tell the executable the free space. This allows the executable to be smaller in size and not have to write the function that has already exists. Sxx

Thanks Steve, Sorted at the moment. goggled it and found loads of peps have had the same thing. Some have recommeded a fix by downloading something from ms, but another forum said folk who downloaded the fix were then having a different problem, so following 2 peps suggestions on yahoo forum by uninstalling the last security update. Message no longer appears.

Oh dear, just noticed the update shield at the bottom of the screen, so when I turn off it will install again and I'll be back to square one. Had a quick peep on the windows update forum and it seems ms is aware of the problem. Been clicking on this & that to read what to do with the fix as others on the forum have found other problems but getting tired so will sort it tomorrow, maybe it will be better explained then, or at least my mind should be fresh.

I think what Steve forgot to paste was that you can do all that and you may also tell Windows to ignore the download in the future. It depends on your Windows Update settings but basically you can do an advanced (manual) update and tell the machine to ignore the upgrade in the future.
