Member Since: March 2004 Posts: 10 Send Message	I've just got my great grandads death certificate which says he was a ship's greaser and died at a boarding house in southampton. It doesn't say what ship he was working on at the time - does anyone know how I could find this out? Sarah

If he was in the Merchant navy, Merchant seamen’s pouches for the period 1913 – 1940 are held at Southampton Archives. How ever many for 1914-1918 are missing. They often include photographs. Photocopies and colour copies can be obtained. The staff are extremely helpful and know the records well. Southampton archives are located here: http://www.southampton.gov.uk/libraries/family-history/maritime-coll.asp#0 Another helpful and resourceful site is: http://www.barnettresearch.freeserve*co.uk/main.htm replace the star in the address with a dot. If you cannot locate what you are looking for it could be the records are held in the repository in Canada. If he should be in the Royal navy have a look at the National Archives site.
