Have just got 2 certs which say death was from debilty from birth .One 8 months the other 6 months. Were these just fail children or do you think they had a debilty? Also one who died of Croup at 2 years. These were 1874/1882/4 Do not think children die from Croup now,do they? Thank you for your thoughts Daphne

I would suspect that 'debility' meant some kind of birth injury which resulted in brain injury eg cerebral palsy, epilepsy etc. Even today children die from the consequencies of difiicult deliveries, in fact it is the most dangerous day of your life. Yes children can still die of croup if not treated early an properly. (I used to be a midwife & a paediatric nurse and have seen children with croup, it is very distressing)

My sister came very close to dying of croup in 1975 at the age of just 1. Fortunately she made a slow but full recovery, but it was a very worrying time. I remember the doctor told mum to use special sulphur burning stuff around the house. Trouble was it made it extremely hard for any of us to breathe - so I'm not surprised the condition used to kill if that was the medical advice!
