Hi, I just can't seem to find a birth for GEORGE STEPHENSON, born c.1822, WYMONDHAM, Norfolk. He's on all the later censuses with 'wife' Jane (born c1825,Milborne Port,Somerset/Dorset) and children. First son, also George, born 1852, Battle,Sussex - now someone the other day helped me find HIM, registered as 'Stepheson' missing 'n', but I can't find father George on IGI - where next? I'd like to pin his birthplace down as I can't find the marriage and they came from such different parts of the country. |

Hi, I live in Wymondham! There is very little on the IGI for Norfolk, they are one county who would not hand over info to the Mormons. Have you tried Norfolk Transcription Archive website - not complete but a lot of brilliant research on there. Also the Norfolk Baptism Project which is now under way. Take it you have found him on the 1841? |

Not yet, but I will (tomorrow- eyes tired now, wine has been consumed...!) Thanks Heather, I didn't even know to try IGI til I read it on here the other day, so any and all advice welcome! That's interesting about Norfolk and IGI Actually no to 1841 - the only George of the right-ish birth i can see is in Yorkshire, and of course it just says 'not born here', so I can't be sure. Hoping to find his marriage pre 1841 and then find both of them together on census, or at least 1851 ( son registered 1st qtr 1852, kind of hoping they'd be in that area for the census, but no luck so far) |

Contd.. I have him + Jane on 1901,1891,1881,1871-same address! A kind helper also looked for the address in 1861 and that part of the census seems to be missing. For someone settled for the best part of 35 years, I'm interested in how he came from Norfolk, met someone from Somerset, had a son in Sussex and ended up in Cardiff?! plus the only likely young men I find in 1841 are in the north of England. And I thought people were less likely to travel in those days! |

PDH, I thought the same as you, but one relative I've been tracing lately lived somewhere completely different on every census, from the south coast of England to Scotland! I think people were prepared to go anywhere to find work. |
