Elaine maybe he was too Ill to sign his name if the will was made just before he died, the initials could be those of his solicitor or witness showing they witnessed him making his mark. Georgina.

Hi everyone, I know how knowledgable you all are and as usual I've been acting like a real duh brain......am off work for a bit and have just read hubbys 3x G,Grandfathers will and need help please.....after all the who has what etc,it states and I quote:set by my hand and seal the day and year above written John X Rosier his mark (LJ) Signed Sealed and Published and Declared by the above named John Rosier....it then goes on with sound mind memory and understanding and his London Solicitors names etc.The will was written in 1817 just before he died,,,,,,we are surprised he made his mark and not signed the will as we felt certain he was literate as he was a very successful merchant and businessman....but the seal gets us does the (LJ) stand for a legal term as he puts his mark or is it his personal seal as it dooes mention set my hand and seal........if so a big family ???? as his initials are JR..........but then I've also found him in Surrey Land Tax Assessments 1780 -1831/32 ROSIER ?/JOHN 1795 MITCHAM .......could it be although always known as John(John is on his headstone as well) that he had another christian name he dropped possibly beginning with L.....and that could be why none of the family after years of searching have any idea where he was born or about his 1st marriage he just appears in 1801 in Mitcham with wife Dorothy and baptises his ?Ist child...His headstone is eroding badly and his age illigible and none of us can find a John Rosier that fits anywhere in GB,maybe we shouldn't be looking for a John at all.......sorry I've rambled on but it's very difficult to explain.......what do you clever folks think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
