Hi everyone - has anyone ever had to research Australian ancestors from the UK? I've been after a branch of my family for a long while who just disappear from the UK after 1881 - I've found a family that I think could be them on a ship called the Compta arriving in Queensland in 1882, but don't know what to do. I've looked at the QLD archive website but you can't do online searches - and although I've emailed, I've had no response. I feel like a genealogical beginner all over again! Kim |

Hiya...not much good at Oz research really, but if you put 'Australia' in the search box above you will get all the threads up about Australia, these might help, also keep your eye out for Tony in Oz...he is very helpful. most importantly don't give up, you can and will find a wealth of imformation, you just have to keep digging...best of luck.....Lilly...ps just noticed there a couple of people offering to do look ups on the record board, it might be worth, having a read of their thread and then maybe asking for a lookup....the people that do look ups, are really lovely people and have help to knock more than one brick wall down...I would have been lost without their help at certain points in my search..... |

Cheers for the advice - I know it has been over 120 years since they went - long since dust - but I'm very impatient! I'll keep my eyes open on genes reunited for further advice. |

Hi Kim, what were their names, ages etc. There are several online websites you may be able to trace your ancestors, especially if they (or their children) were in World War 1 & 2. Most cemeteries are on-line, I have found a wealth of information from MI's. Also Queensland death certificates show ; Deceased Name. Occupation. Sex Age. Place of Death. Where born, and if not born in Australia period of residence in Australia. Parents name and occupation of father & mothers maiden name. Marriages Childrens names How, when, & where they are buried. Let me know if I can be of help Helen Brisbane Australia |

To Helen, Thanks for the tips, it was actually a MI that sent me in your direction. My ancestors were: Thomas Wade HInchsliff born 1842, his wife Emily born 1844 and their two children William Henry born 1865 and Laura Elizabeth born 1867. I had done a search on google for a thomas wade hinchsliff and it brought up a richard wade hinchsliff buried in sandgate, Brisbane. The Hinchsliff variation is so uncommon, and the Wade as a middle name - it has to be more then a coincidence! Anyway, then I found the assisted Immigration list on the QLD archive website, and on the 7th Nov 1882 there is a family on the 'Compta', arriving in QLD. The surname is spelled slightly differently, but I'm used to that with the Hinchsliff name - the ages fit exactly. I'm so excited, but at the same time frustrated that I can't seem to find anything. Are there any online deaths indexes I could search for Thomas or Emily's deaths? Or Williams marriage? Cheers for ANY advice given, Kim in the cold & mistly north-east. PS - If any Australian members want to swap lookups, I have access to UK BDM, all the census returns to 1901 and some of the Scottish ones. |

I don't think there are any Queensland BMDs online, but you could try a cemetery search: http://www.ozgenonline*com/aust_cemeteries/qld/index.htm (replace * with dot) |

Richard Wade had a son called William Henry Murray Hinchsliff; there's a brief service record online (looks as though he was discharged from the Navy and enlisted in the Army): http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ResearcherScreen.asp (choose 'Search now as a guest') There are a couple of people with Hinchsliff as a middle name on that site who may be related to your people. |

Hi Kim, Following on with Mary and Lea postings & your MI at St Margaret's Anglican Memorial Garden, I think it has been established that Richard Wade Hinchsliff b1890, was that son of William H Hinchsliff b1865, and that he had a son William Henry Hinchsliff born 15th May 1919 at Oakey located 157 km west of Brisbane. It would appear that someone else has an interest in this lineage as you can view digital copies of his WW2 records on line at the National Archives website Mary gave you. On this site he is listed as Hinchsliff and his NOK in 1940 are Richard Wade and Eva B Hinchsliff. However on the WW2 Nominal Roll he is listed as Hinchcliff and his NOK is Joan ( his wife?) Name HINCHCLIFF, WILLIAM HENRY Service Royal Australian Navy Service Number B/2665 Date of Birth 15 May 1919 Place of Birth OAKEY, QLD Date of Enlistment 30 Jul 1940 Locality on Enlistment Unknown Home Port/Port Division BRISBANE, QLD Next of Kin JOAN Date of Discharge 12 Aug 1945 Rank Able Seaman Posting at Discharge HMAS Moreton WW2 Honours and Gallantry None for display Prisoner of War No I have checked the whitepages on http://www(.)whitepages(.)com(.)au/wp/resSearch.do and only 8 Hinchsliff's are listed for the whole of Queensland - 7 Brisbane area & close surrounds, and 1 just up the Sunshine Coast at Moffat Beach. Hi Kim, Another son of Richard Wade Hinchsliff is Jack Murray who is buried in the same plot as him at St Margarets. Jack was born on 22nd December, 1916 and died 22nd July 1960. Once again his WW2 records are available online at National Archives. He is listed at Hinchcliff , addresses include his parents at 4th Avenue Sandgate, Brisbane. His NOK is wife Jessie, and like his brother William, he was Rank Able Seaman Posting at Discharge HMAS Moreton. Bye Helen |
