It still stands today - Registrars have to initial corrections and enter them in a book. OC |

Scarlett Ribbons is right - as late as the 1980's civil servants couldnt scrap paperwork with mistakes or even cover it up with 'tipex' you had to strike it out and in my day initial against it |

Some where - the relevant record office- there will be a book of numbered corrections. i'd guess the registrar mis heard Ellen , when he was supposed to hear Helen, He cant just screw it up and start again. he has to alter it, and record the fact that he did so.So his 48th error was writing Ellen not Helen At least , that is what i am given to understand |

I would imagine that it was simply a correction to the spelling of the name - not sure what the 48 refers but are you sure its not the scrawlled initials of th official striking the incorrect spelling out |

i have amarriage cert and the bride name as ellen but then crossed out and 48 put by it and then helen,anyone tell why this was done thank you joyce |
