Angela, I think that you are probably right - they just changed their minds about his name. His father is down as deceased on the childs death certificate and I'm now wondering if the mother changed the childs name to his father's after the father's death. What a horrilble few years that woman had, married in June 1847, birth of child Sept 1848, death of both husband and child by May 1849. Still widowed and working as a servant in 1851. I'll never complain again! Sue |

Sorry, having a senior moment! It is a death certificate you have not a birth certificate. I had better go and lie down and take my medication!!! |

Perhaps the baby was registered with one name then his parents changed their minds and baptised him under another name? Just a thought!! Or is it possible that there were twins? Does the birth certificate have a time of birth on it? If it does, then this might indicate that he was a twin. |

Reg - I've checked 1851 and 1861 for Edwin and no sign. I believe I've found the mother widowed in 1851 near another family member. The birth of Edwin is registered at exactly the right time for that of Joseph ie 10mths before death. I did think that maybe they were twins but why register only one birth and where's Edwin if they were? Sue |

Birth registration wasn't compulsory until 1875. The boy probably wasn't registered.......... You need to check for the other child in subsequent censuses............ Reg |

I received a copy of a death certificate yesterday in the name of Joseph Thomas Dibley aged 10 months in 1849. I didn't know of his existence until then as I thought I was sending for either his father or grand fathers death cert. (all same name) However the only birth to a Dibley in the Lambeth area in 1848 is to an Edwin Chick Dibley, as the mothers maiden name was Chick this seems to be the correct birth - but how/ why change the name completely for death certificate? Is this a common occurrence as I've not come across it before? Sue |
