What does it mean please?

I have been looking at the 1841 census and the occupation of several men,( obviously working for the farmer who is listed a little above,_ is M.L. There are also F.L., and this I take to mean farm labourer...is the M.L..a manual labourer, if so what is the difference, seeing as they appear to be working on the same a farm? Kathlyn

I think you'll find they are actually M S and F S Male Servant and Female Servant Labourers are almost always shortened to Lab......if at all. Reg
