Hi Can anybody advise please? I have been asked by my next door neighbour who is 80 years old, if I can help him find out more about the family listed below. He says that family legends say that Raymer Ramsey ran off with Robert Whitehead a soldier and married him in secret, when her family found out they disowned her. Apparently her family were extremely wealthy. On the Census details listed below it says that she was born in Ireland, according to my neighbour she was born in Scotland possibly Fife. The children had very unusual names. Daughter Jane was christened Jane Graves Whitehead, Son Alexander was Alexander Ramsey Whitehead, and Daughter Raymer was christened Raymer Sabine Whitehead. I’ve got a gut feeling that Robert and Raymer were never married. I’ve looked on LDS and getting nowhere. Anybody have any idea where I could find Raymer Ramsey’s snr birth or anything about her. I’ve traced the family from 1841 onwards and they all lived in Rochdale. Any suggestions would be welcome??? The family legend about Raymer leaving home to marry a soldier seems likely - he could have been posted to Ireland where I see the oldest children were born, and in 1851 they give Alexander's birthplace as Woolwich which was a garrison town. The story of well to do relatives may have been exaggerated over the years, I think a lot of us have similar stories in our families. Raymer's age was rounded down to 35 in 1841 and was given as 47 in 1851 so the marriage could have taken place as early as 1820 - not sure how easy it would be to track down a marriage if it took place in Ireland? R(a)ymer gives Scotland as her birthplace on the 1851 census, and in fact the 1841 image looks more like S for Scotland than I for Ireland so your neighbour may well be right about that part of the story. Perhaps she had already moved to Ireland where she met Robert, or perhaps they met in Scotland and she accompanied him to Ireland later.
